thanks for joining us. 6:00 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. time to check in with meteorologist christina loren. she's got a look at our forecast. >> good morning to you. we have a good looking forecast for today. >> we're having trouble hearing you. can we work out the mike issue? there must be fog, we're having a tough time with visibility. >> where are you getting that? we have a little fog, not just yet. we're looking good from san jose through livermore up to the peninsula but the north bay starting to drop in places like santa rosa, and of course between about 6:00 and 8:00 we see the thickest fog. we're going to keep watching that. let's find out if it's impacting your drive. >> definitely going to be a factor. also between 6:00 and 9:00 we have a heavier volume, antioch, i'll circle it. you can't make it out. speeds are starting to dip through antioch. and of course that means changing volume on the roadways,

changing conditionings. the san mateo bridge, the haze and the fog creeping around. chp not giving warnings. we look to christina all the time. >> we're following a developing story. a search will resume for a suspect who shot at an east bay district police officer on patrol. it happened near the upper san leandro reservoir not far from the moraga country club where christie smith joins us live with the latest. distinguish morning. >> reporter: good morning. i spoke with park police by phone and they tell me they are going to start probably after 8:00 this morning not only looking for the shooters but evidence of drug activity in the hills after a very scary shootout. they believe the shooters may have been protecting their marijuana grow operation in the hills when they fired on this east bay regional park police officer with a rifle.

fortunately he was okay and able to fire back. unclear if he hit any one. this happened in the rugged parklands near the upper san leandro reservoir yesterday just before 7:00 at night. the officer had to request emergency help and other officers had to go in with an armored rescue car to get him out. park police say the area has seen grow operations in the past. neighbors heard some of the commotion, all of it too close for comfort. >> definitely a concern because if he's on the loose he can go nowhere but come only this side. families, yeah. we are definitely concerned. >> reporter: officers from moraga, lafayette and others all helped out and a manhunt was launched by foot and with the helicopter but that was called off around 10:00 at night when it got too dark to see.

we're told at this point they are looking for at least two shooters and maybe even more. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> san bruno city council is facing two big issues tonight. it will decide what to do with an expiring moratorium on medical pot clubs. members could set up rules regarding the clubs or ban the establishments. the san mateo voters approve add proposition legalizing medical marijuana back in 1996. the city council is slated to approve a settlement over sewage spills. it's a separate item. state agency and groups sued over the alleged spills caused by decaying pipes. most of the settlement will be spent on improving sewer lines. legalizing recreational marijuana trying to win over a second time they got the green

light to gather more than 500,000 signatures to place that on the ballot. a similar measure was rejected last november. an east bay teen who survive add bear attack is back home this morning. cheers and tears for victor as he hobbled into his richmond home. martin and 6 other teams walking single fill across the river. the bear bit martin on the ankle but the teen's sense of humor intact. >> i like that. i kicked him dead up in his face. we was done after that k.o., you don't mess with me. don't play that. don't play that. >> all joking aside martin says he is lucky to be alive. in all, six teens were injured by the bear, two are still in

the hospital in alaska with serious injuries. >> police believe three smpts in two deadly shootings went on a crime spree in colorado. yesterday police announced the names of the suspect. kristin fuentez and fa dal were involved and two armed robberies. it happened in the day between the two fatal shootings in east palo alto. catherine fisher and hugo chavez died. >> the mother of a man who died in a confrontation with police is speaking out about her son's death. in a press conference denika wanted truth about what happened the day that kenneth harding died. the family's attorney said they have not decided if harding was wrongfully killed when he ran from a police officer after they suspected he didn't have a valid muni fare. investigators say last week the bullet that killed harding did

not come from a police gun and that harding had gun shot res do on his hand. >> police and officials are trying to make bus stops safer. they are going to meet in the tenderloin to talk about concerns over wisconsin shelters in the area. police say the bus shelter at turk and high streets has become a site for criminal activity. it happens at 6:00 in the tenderloin police station on eddy street. back in business after four long months the nfl lockout finally came to an end in time for summer training. marla tellez is live outside the 49ers' practice facility. things will likely come back to life this morning. good morning. >> yeah, the big unknown is who is actually going to show up here at the niners' facility when the doors open in about 45 minutes or so at 7:00. the reason i say this is because

official training camp starts this thursday. today it is all volu voluntary. you can take a look and see that the tents, the big white tents are ready. no doubt the coaches and players are really to play. for those players who show up it's a chance for them to get ta know their head coach. some will meet him for the first time today. jim harbaugh was hired on january 7. he is anxious to get the season started. he also acknowledges they have a lot of catching up to do both in the office and on the field. >> first order of business is start seeing our players, get knee to knee and eyeball to eyeball with them. and honestly that's the thing i'm most excited about. i think there will be an equilibrium good for me

personally to be back with the guys. >> reporter: during the lockout some of the 49ers have been working out at san jose state. an unofficial training camp partly organized by alex smith. the camp nicknamed camp alex, in fact. as i mentioned, training camp starts this thursday. the season gets under way september 8. i know bay area football fans are excited. for the niners they play the first game at candle stick paar park. against the seattle sauks. that's what's going on with the red and gold. i know you're going to talk about the silver and black. >> across the bay the raiders are expected to start training camp tomorrow in napa and introduce their new head coach hugh jackson. the raiders play their first preseason game sunday, august 28. here on nbc bay area. all right. we got your bay area football

covered. time to cover the weather. >> that's when the women say are you ready to lose your husband? that's coming back. low pressure has not gone anywhere. onshore flow continues. but the biggest difference between yesterday morning and this morning is we're not seeing as much fog. san jose it's mostly cloudy but we do have clear skies over livermore. stormy conditions possible. isolated as we head through thirst and friday, it's hard to believe but the consoonle moisture will head to the north through the next 72 hours, for us that means it's not only going to get hot, it's going to get muggy and in an unstable environment will make for strong isolated thunderstorms. 56 degrees now in livermore, 58 in hayward. off to about 72 in oakland i bumped you up from yesterday. 85 in gilroy.

a live look outside. golden gate bridge shrouded in the fog that we've been talking about. hopefully that will lift off. we'll check in with christina coming up. 6:14. alleged serial killer joseph nasa will be in court to get a ruling on a q. he decided to represent himself on charges he killed four northern california women but asked the judge to appoint an advisory counsel to the case at the public's expense. prosecutors argue nasowas worth $1 million. he says he's too poor to pay for a lawyer. he is accused of killing four women. police are looking for more giants fans who may have been attacked on opening day. >> any one assaulted on march 31st at dodger stadium, especially any one who is wearing giants attire, any one on the third base side or any one assaulted in the parking lots to contact us.

>> two men beat bryan stow in a stadium parking lot in march. the suspects louie sanchez and marvin norwood appeared in court for the first time yesterday. sanchez is accused of attacking another man and woman the day of the stow attack. accusations his lawyer denies. >> doesn't fit the profile of somebody who would commit this type of crime. he's a family man. >> also arrested in the case dorene sanchez, louie's sister and norwood's girlfriend, facing charges as an accessory but is out on $50,000 bail. the condition of former governor arnold schwarzenegger's son is improving. his son christopher suffered a collapsed lung and broken bones while body boarding at malibu beach. yesterday schwarzenegger sweeted his appreciation to well-wishers. he writes, thanks for all of your support for christopher. it means a lot to him and to me. he's doing much better and we'll

have him back at full speed soon. >> hundred bucks putting your trash cans out too early or not putting them away on time. that could be a reality for people in santa rosa. tonight the council will talk about limiting the hours trash containers can be left at the curb. 12 hours before scheduled take-out or 12 hours later anything more than you'll have to pay. could be charged $100, $250 for the second offense and $500 for any time after that. >> the fate of 100 workers hangs in limbo as pg&e considers closing five power plants in the east bay. utility says it wants to close the plants in east contra costa county to make the power grid cleaner. the plants are at least 20 years old and run by burning petroleum coke, a byproduct of oil refining. pg&e says it's possible the workers at the plants could be offered jobs at a facility in tracy. that plant in tracy is fueled by cleaner burning natural gas.

chp is going to assist. this is into the one eastbound bore but the bore, that tunnel is open to traffic, a smooth drive westbound, both bores that direction. antioch, this area that i circled, the speed back up close to 60 than 50 so a lighter commute. and also showing us past the coliseum, 880, the like shot shows no major issues northbound with the taillights away from us. the volume holding steady down to hayward and that interchange with the san mateo bridge. >> in the midst of tight becomes and deficits san mateo county has found a way to give raises to its nurses and sheriff sergeants. county reached an agreement with the nurses association to give nurses an annual 3% raise over the next three years. sheriff sergeants are guarantee add 3% salary bump in 2015. in return both nurses and sheriff sergeants agreed to change their pension plans that

would raise their retirement age. the new contracts will save the county more than $4 million over the next ten years. >> time to check in with scott mcgrew. want to watch a movie? scott says try walmart. >> the company launched an online movie service on walmart.com. the technology is powered by a santa clara company. the lincoln lawyer will cost you $4. $3.99 on demand. that's more bad news for netflix. shares under pressure this morning after that company warned its massive price hike, 60%, would probably cause fewer people to sign up for the service as first-time customers. the stock was down more than 10% overnight. netflix had been on a roll. even if you bought in the last couple of months you're still up. lawyers for the video game industry are asking for at least $1 million in california

>> good morning. thanks for joining us. 6:28 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> any day in july, especially late july when you don't have to turn on the air conditioning at least not until the hottest point of the day it's going to be a beautiful day today. temperatures just up a little bit from yesterday's highs, talking about the upper 70s, low 80s even in the warmest spots across the bay. but we've got a warm-up on the way. yes, mid-90s back on that extended forecast. we'll talk all about that, let's get to you work at 6:29 with mike inouye. >> we'll check the south bay overall looking good. but i want to circle this one. the 71 reported north of the 680/280 interchange, in the 50s about 10 minutes ago so the speeds are fluctuating, increased traffic is going to show slowing. starting to form now at the toll plaza.

i'll give you a better look at the commute coming up. >> 6:29 now. a stunning twist in the case of three middle school boys charged with sexually assaulting two girls during a field trip. all three now admit they attacked the girls in a redwood city park. two of the boys, 13 and 14, could get a maximum of eight years behind bars, for lewd and lascivious behavior. the third boy who is 12 could get a year in jail for sexual battery. the boys admit what had they did yesterday. the day the trial was supposed to begin. two other boys are also charged in connection with that assault. >> in hours officers will be out in force looking for one of two gunmen who fire add rifle at park police. it happened in a remote area not far from the moraga country club where christie smith joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i got off the phone with park police. they tell me they are going to

meet about 8:00 and starting their manhunt. probably going to launch a helicopter this morning looking for the shooters or any evidence of drug activity after someone shot at a park police officer with a rifle. he was just doing his job on patrol near the upper san leandro reservoir last night before 7:00, very popular area with hikers. now, the officer was able to fire back. unclear if any one was hit. he called for help and other officers in an armored car had to help get him out. part of the job, they say, is to look for active marijuana grow operations and the shooters may have been protecting their pot. >> east bay mud property is an area that has been known prior for marijuana grows. we have had armed individuals

guarding the grows. >> reporter: a search by air and land went on for at least three hours but it got dark and they weren't able to find any one. park police say they are looking for at least two shooters and maybe more. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. this morning anti-drug agents are raiding marijuana grows in six counties to get rid of illegal marijuana farms. in the mendocino national forest, the raids started last week and officers have arrested 77 people netting 300,000 marijuana plants. the latest raids include lake, and colusa counties. ready for football, it's back. 49ers and raiders getting ready to get busy. following the nfl lockout that officially ended yesterday, marla tellez is live at the 49ers training facility this morning. players are expected to start

trickling in. good morning. >> reporter: slowly but surely. good morning, laura. so far only have seen a couple of administrators make their way inside the practice facility. no players yet. the doors expected to open at 7:00 this morning so less than 30 minutes away. after 133-day lockout it's been a long time coming. this means training camp, the official training camp, will start on time, and that's on thursday, this thursday. today it's all about voluntary training, some conditioning and even classroom instruction. because it is voluntary it's not certain who is going to show up today but those who do, for many it's going to be their first chance to say hello to their new head coach jim harbaugh, the former head coach at stanford and former nfl quarterback is nervous and excited to get his team together and the season under way, saying he has a long to-do list to tackle in the

coming days. >> talking about practice starting, talking about signing undrafted players, college free agents, our own drafted players, unrestricted free agents, meetings, all that's going to take place simultaneously. >> reporter: under the new labor deal, nfl teams can sign rookies and undrafted free agents as of today. they can also negotiate with veteran free agents. but players are prohibited from signing on the dotted line until this friday at 3:00 p.m. the niners have more than a dozen free agents including alex smith and running back brian westbrook. again, we're waiting to see who is going to show up at the training facility in santa clara. we'll be here throughout the morning to see who does show up. official training camp starts on

clouds. the sun will break through that thick cloud bank. we're looking at a nice second half of the day. temperatures climbing to 72 at 4:00 p.m. in oakland, we'll see a little breeze and that will tend to push that out of the area so mostly clear conditions. onshore flow with good air quality and things start to change closer to this weekend and high pressure regains control. that's going to bring our temperatures up from the low 80s and upper 70s back to the 90s. 81 for today, though, in fremont and san jose. 85 in gilroy. and 82 degrees in santa rosa. 65 that's it in the city. we climb as we get through the next few days. i've got the extended forecast coming up. right now let's get to you work with mike inouye. >> no big surprises for the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are on and the backup building at the toll plaza. slow off of the berkeley curve. this disabled car as well eastbound, should be cleared in a few minutes.

president obama and house speaker john boehner made back-to-back prime time tv appearances last night. tracie potts joins us live from washington to tell us more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. here's what they said. the president said look, we don't have a lots of time left here. this is a dangerous game that america can no longer afford to play. it's going to play out in higher interest rates for ordinary americans. now, the president said he'll back off what he wanted which was higher taxes for the rich, and go with the senate's backup plan which is about two-thirds of the cuts he asked for but no taxes. john boehner coming behind saying that there will be no blank check for this president, that he didn't just walk away from negotiations, he gave it his all, those were his words, but the president simply wouldn't say yes to what he thinks is a reasonable plan. which is the trillion dollars in cuts that they can agree on now and then move down the road about six months and look for more cuts and more agreement

then. this crisis he said is not in congress, it's a crisis in the oval office, in the white house, the president refusing to sign. both sides refusing to agree, still in a stalemate, still gridlocked, one week away from this deadline. >> we'll see what happens. thank you. the giants know a thing or two about overcoming a deficit. famous for their comeback wins. who knows, maybe bruce bochy and the president compared notes during the giants' trip to the white house yesterday. the team got a tour, they met with the president himself. they gave him an autographed jersey. he also cracked a few jokes. >> now, underneath brian's beard, andy's spandex tuxedo and the sea captain costume, and the cleats with his face on them, is also one of the most dominant

closers in baseball. >> the president said he did fear the beard. the giants will back on the field today a rematch of last year's national league championship series. cody ross can expect a cold reception. the game starts at 4:05. tim lincecum gets the start. he got a few good shout-outs from the president. the a's are home against the braves, they won last night thanks to a seventh inning rally. connor jacks at any hero in this one. knocking in two runs to give the a's a good lead. final score, 7-5. >> construction has ground to a halt at oakland airport. crews stopped work because congress failed to reauthorize funding for the faa. the project is one of dozens stalled until congress votes to reinstate the funding. also stall add plan to let super large airplanes fly into sfo. the faa was working to get san

francisco permission to allow the planes to fly into the airport. those cannot continue until funding is restored. >> police say a well known orinda man swindled bay area families to pay for his lavish lifestyle. carl miller, the former head of the orinda group, is pleading not guilty to stealing the savings of hundreds of people. prosecutors say miller cheated 175 clients out of more than $1 million, taking retirement money and using it on personal luxuries like a $3 million home and the yoof a private jet for family vacations. miller faces nine felony counts. if convicted he faces up to ten years behind bars. miller's alleged victims say he deserves it. >> i would like to see him spend a lot of time in prison to make up for what he did to the peo e people. >> miller's attorney says that miller is trying to do what he

can to make things right. >> 6:44. time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. another gorgeous start, it's crisp out there this morning. we aren't noticing as much fog as we had at this time yesterday. but we do have a little bit of reduced visibility in places like novato so watch out for that. we're looking pretty good as we head throughout the day. you'll probably want to get outside if you can. our temperatures are going to climb into the upper 70s, low 80s. one of those days we're going to see such beautiful weather that you're going to want to get outside especially when i show you the seven-day and the impending changes through this weekend. let's get to it. low pressure providing on shore flow, mild, high pressure regains control as we head into this weekend. and that means possible thunderstorms and monsoonal wrap around moisture coming up into the bay area. 58 in hayward, for now 56 in san mateo and 54 in san francisco. as we head throughout the

ver the last ten minutes. >> thanks, mike. 6:51. san jose state students are waiting to find out if they are living in a dorm or maybe a hotel for their first year. we told you about the university's housing crunch. it accepted more students than the school requires freshmen to live on campus if the home is more than 30 miles from the ufrmt now 200 returning students have to live off campus. administrators are negotiating a deal with a yet to be named hotel. the hotel will be within walking distance or a short light rail ride from campus. >> the main concern is that students want to live on campus. they want to have the benefit of being close to class and to the library, so we're going to do our best to address that with the light rail, with shuttle service in the evening. >> once the university tells students which hotel they selected, they will have five days to agree or decline.

imagine the room service bill. governor jerry brown is like the rest of us, pumps gas, jury duty, yeah. the governor will call in tonight to see if he'll be needed at the alameda county court house on wednesday. the former state attorney has served on a jury once before during his first term as governor. in 1981 he was part of a jury that acquitted a man of malicious miss chief. you may recall brown's opponent last year, meg whitman, was also called to jury duty. she spent two days before she was dismissed. giants host a special baby shower for 300 expecting moms. the giants will honor the participants of the giants baby contest. all of the women are trying to deliver their baby closest to august 1 at 7:45 p.m. the date and time marks the 9-month anniversary of the
